2009 Newsletter :: Iris O’Ferrall

President Iris O'FerrallAs my year as President is coming to a close it is my pleasure to say some final words about the year just past. The year has gone so quickly since being elected in May. The Golf Outing in August was the first highlight. I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to Andrew Stroughair for running it. It was Andrew’s first year and it was most successful indeed.

The next big function was our annual dinner in the Royal St. George Yacht Club with guest speaker Senator Shane Ross who spoke strongly about education policy in Ireland. It coincided with my 40th class reunion and over 25 of my year came to the dinner which was a great delight. A big ‘thank you’ to the year of ’68 for your support. The evening was great success and enjoyed by all.

The Bridge night and Table Quiz are fun evenings run to raise money for the Bursary Fund. These evenings are essential as we try to keep the value of the Bursary Funds up with inflation. This year, as with all charitable funds, the value of the fund fell but demand for these bursaries increase with the rise in school fees. We sincerely thank individuals who sent donations in and if you are in a position to help the Bursary fund we would be grateful to receive donations large or small.

I represented the Union at the Dinners of our kindred Associations where new friendships are made and old ones renewed.

As I write we still have our London Reunion in March and the Midlands & South Reunion in Kilkenny in May.

My year was made easy by my hard working committee. Special thanks to our Hon. Secretary, Valerie Grimes, who with her vast knowledge guided me through the year and our Hon. Treasurer, Alison Galbraith.

Peter Squire takes over as President at the AGM on 13 May. I wish him a most successful year and I know you will give him the same support as your gave me. Both Wesley College and its Past Pupils Union are flourishing and this is a great credit to the whole Wesley ‘family’ at home and abroad.

Iris O’Ferrall (née Willoughby)
President
