Class of 1976 – 40 Year Reunion

Class 1976 | 40 Year Renunion

The 40th Reunion of the Class of 76 were organised by Linda Young (Foster), Gay Veitch (Weld) and Bryan Leech. However, it was a huge effort to re-connect with former classmates from forty years ago and many individuals assisted in finding members of Class of ’76.

Here is there report ….

When from ‘Wesley’ far we scatter, and scatter we did. We spent over twelve months working on our Wesley College 40th Reunion. However, despite our best efforts, a few threads remained elusive there were, regretfully, about twenty or so classmates that we didn’t manage to contact ahead of the reunion weekend.

We were very fortunate that so many of our classmates travelled long distances to attend the events with former students arriving from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United States of America, Switzerland, Spain, the Netherlands, the UK and, of course, from all corners of our own island.

We elected to have a three ‘official’ events for our reunion weekend.

Event One

On Friday the 14th October 45 classmates dined at Carluccio’s Restaurant on Dawson Street. The food was sublime and the staff were absolutely brilliant. There was an ‘unofficial’ meeting in Neary’s Bar before the main event and it was useful for distribution of name badges and a little mingling before taking our seats at Carluccio’s.

Event Two

On the morning of Saturday the 15th October we had a morning coffee reception at the school and Mr. Christopher Woods, Principal, provided a tour of Wesley College in the 21st Century. About 30 of the group were present and we were joined by the Class of ’66 which, incidentally, included two former science teachers, Mr. Rice and Mr. Gleeson. It was fascinating to see the development of school campus and to witness that the school has gone from strength to strength over the last forty years. We were so impressed with the additional buildings, the enhanced sports facilities and happy to see the upgrading of those original buildings we remember from our time in Ballinteer undertaken with respect for the original designs by Robin Walker.  Following the tour some classmates met up for lunch at various locations nearby.

Event Three

On Saturday evening fifty six met at the Waterloo Bar on Baggot Street for a reception with finger food and a glass of prosecco. The venue was ideal as we had a private bar on the first floor and there was much interaction and reminiscing over the course of the evening. The food was excellent and the staff at The Waterloo Bar were so friendly and accommodating.

Florence Nerby (Fleming), Head Girl, and Russell Best, Head Boy, were on hand for speeches.

Russell paid a fitting tribute to our absent friends, Pratheba, Zoe, Stuart, Sandra and Richard who we remember as bright and as beautiful as the day they were first interwoven into our lives. May they Rest in Peace and stay in our memories forever.

Florence encouraged everyone to sign up to the Wesley PPU to ensure that we kept in touch and could be located for the next reunion event with greater ease.

Shirley Thompson (Fitzgerald) followed with a short message to inform everyone that any profits from the reunion event would be donated to the Wesley PPU Bursary Fund and she encouraged everyone to visit the Bursary webpage to support this worthy cause.
